6 Days North Ethiopia Tours

Day 1:

Arrival to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

In the morning, fly to Lalibela. After lunch, start your tour to the Northwestern Cluster of churches: Bet Medhane Alem, Bet Maryam, Bet Meskel, Bet Danaghel, Bet Mikael and Bet Golgotha (entrance not allowed for women in this church). In the late afternoon, visit a local house to witness the preparation of local food.

Day 2:

Lalibela

After breakfast, drive out 42 km to Yimerhane Kristos to visit an impressive rock caved church. After lunch, continue with the Southeastern Cluster of churches: Bet Gabriel-Rufael, Bet Merkorios, Bet Amanual, and Bet Abba Libanos. Finally, you will visit the most famous of all the churches, Bet Giyorgis, constructed in honor of the patron saint of Ethiopia: Saint George. End your day with a stunning sunset over the mountains of Lasta.

Day 3:

Lalibela – Gondar

Early in the morning, drive to Gondar. This route covers around 350 km and it takes about 6 hours. On the way, you will witness the daily lifestyles of the highland farmers while admiring the beautiful landscape of the Amhara Region. After lunch, explore the sites of Gondar, including a visit to the 17th Century Royal Enclosure, with six castles and several other buildings. Afterwards, visit Fasilides’ pool, still used nowadays during the Timkat celebration (the Ethiopian Orthodox Epiphany on the 19th January), and the Debre Birhan Selassie church, with the most famous ceiling in Ethiopia full of staring angels.

Day 4:

Excursion to the Simien Mountains National Park

In the morning, drive to Debark, the gateway to the Simien Mountains National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site and enjoy some light hiking in the afternoon in the park with stunning views. Walia Ibex and Gelada Baboons are routinely spotted.

Day 5:

Gondar – Bahir Dar

In the morning, drive to Bahir Dar. After the check-in, start the city tour with a boat trip on Lake Tana to visit the monasteries located at the Zege Peninsula and the source of the Blue Nile River. Afterwards, visit the Bezawit hill, where Haile Selassie I made his palace built in 1967 and watch the impressive view over the Lake Tana and the city, especially during the sunset.

Day 6:

Bahir Dar – Addis Ababa

In the morning, drive out to the Blue Nile Falls for a short hike in the area. After lunch, fly back to Addis Ababa with time in the afternoon to explore the capital city if wanted. In the evening, Inside Ethiopia Tours offers you a farewell dinner at a traditional restaurant with live music and dancing performances from the different ethnic groups.
